Where we work

We run global funds from one office in Calgary.

Calterra was founded here in 2026, with the Alberta Securities Commission as its principal regulator.

The people

Five principals

One manager is responsible for every fund, and four of the five principals worked side by side in the same Calgary investment group before founding Calterra.

Who runs what

The five principals

Sean Hindmarch

President

Sean built his career in capital markets, beginning in equity research at Peters & Co., a Calgary boutique investment bank, before working as a director in institutional equity sales at National Bank Financial. He then developed a principal-investing platform in Calgary for a Swiss family office, originating and building new operating businesses from the ground up. At Calterra he leads the firm and is responsible for corporate strategy, capital relationships and daily operations. He serves as its Ultimate Designated Person, carrying final accountability for the business. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from the University of Alberta.

Chris Bolton, CFA

Portfolio Manager, Fixed Income

Runs the income fund, CSIF

Chris has worked both sides of the market for more than twenty-five years, a decade of it at BMO Capital Markets, specializing in corporate credit, income trusts and dividend equities. As an analyst he built his forecasting models from scratch for every company he covered. Since 2022 he has been the sole manager, trader and analyst of a Canadian corporate-credit strategy at Cumberland Investment Counsel, built 130/30, the same structure CSIF uses. He has held the CFA charter since 2003 and holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Alberta.

Jason Isaac, CFA, CAIA

Chief Investment Officer

Runs the dividend fund, CEDF

Jason has managed money for clients since 1997, first at Scotia Cassels, then for seven years at HSBC Global Asset Management as lead manager of a global conservative dividend strategy, and for the last eleven in the Cumberland group as a managing director and senior portfolio manager, running global dividend and growth mandates of the same design as Calterra’s. For three years he taught portfolio theory and securities analysis at Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business. He has held the CFA charter since 2000 and the CAIA charter since 2007, and holds a Bachelor of Administration degree from the University of Regina.

Derek VanGenderen, CFA

Portfolio Manager, Global Equities

Runs the growth fund, CEGF

Derek has worked on global strategies that invest both long and short since 2015, first as an equity analyst at Perron Asset Management and then as a portfolio manager at Cumberland Investment Counsel, running a global growth mandate built 130/30. He builds the quantitative rankings the equity strategies run on, weighing companies on profitability, growth, valuation, momentum and how they return capital. He was one of the student managers of the Calgary Portfolio Management Trust at the University of Calgary, and has since returned to mentor its members. He has held the CFA charter since 2019 and holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Finance from the University of Calgary.

Ryan Turner, CFA

Chief Technology Officer

A programmer before he was an analyst, Ryan started at BMO Nesbitt Burns and then spent a decade at NCM Investments, where he built market-data systems its research ran on, backtested quantitative strategies, and recommended changes on the strength of what came back. At Calterra he is responsible for the firm’s technology in the widest sense: the portfolio, trading and client reporting systems, the research infrastructure, and most of whatever else a five-person firm needs built. He has held the CFA charter since 2016 and holds an honours degree in Computing and Financial Management from the University of Waterloo.
